Notes for Johann VINTENHELVER

The following was sent to me by Joan Brooks. It was a photocopy from a book

called Swiss & German Settlers of Penn. by H. Frank Eshleman ca 1917; p.245. The information in his book was taken from the Philadelphia Gazette of Oct. 1732. The following are excerpts of that article.

1732-Another Picture of Suffering and Hardships. Another picture of the dreadful experiences which ignorant Palatines subjected themselves to in their journey to our land.

"Sunday last arrived here Captain Tymberton, in 17 weeks from Rotterdam with 220 Palantines - 44 died in their passage. About three weeks ago the passengers dissatisfied with the length of the voyage, were so imprudent as to make a mutiny, and being the stronger party, have ever once had the government of the vessel giving orders from among themselves to the captain and sailors, who were threatened with death in case of disobedience. Thus, having sight of and they carried the vessel twice backwards and forwards between our ______ and Virginia, looking for a place to go ashore, they knew not where. At length they compelled the sailors to cast the anchor near Cape May and eight of them took the boat by force and went ashore; from whence they have been five days coming up by land to this place, where they found the ship arrived. Those concerned in taking the boat are committed to prison.

This ship was the "John and William" which reached Philadelphia Oct. 17, 1732, under Captain Tymberton from Rotterdam according to Vol. 17, Sec. Series of Pennsylvania Archives, page 72.

......It is indeed interesting to contemplate that these persons suffered such a discouraging experience on their journey here. What a facinating story they must have told their children and grandchildren of their desperate plight, at sea. No wonder they mutinied! Ordinarly 10 to 12 weeks were qute sufficient to make the passage. But these people saw no land after 12, 13, yea 14 weeks of patient sailing. Then they did at the end of 14 weeks or as the account states about 3 weeks before landing.

" Think of the scene on that ship from another point. According to the record there were 98 women and children on the vessel when it landed in addition to about the same number of men. What terror they must have experienced and how the children must have cried in terror. How desperately in despair were the mothers. How helpless all of them! Think too of the deaths -- 44 deaths that voyage. This is, one each third day dies and is sunk in the sea." page 246

" It took brave souls indeed in those days to cross the ocean and found_____. ......These people were surely persons of grim determination; and it is not a great wonder that they succeeded in establishing themselves comfortably in a little while after they reached their new home her on the Conestoga."

(No wonder our Johan Vintenhelver arrived too sick to sign the Allegance papers.)

We have copies of two INDENTURES for land, one dated 1751 and one dated 1771. The name is spelled John Winsonhover and the land was in Frederick Co. VA. Ninety-six acres purchased from Matthew Sharp and wife Elizabeth. Land border- ing on Joshua Hedges land. He bought it for fifty-two pounds, Virginia Currency.

Notes for George VINSONHALER

George moved to Kentucky in 1789 according to a deposition given in a court case.

He was one of the original and principal surveyors in the Military Bounty Land in Southern Ohio. These were the Virginia Military Lands.

(from Jane Rankin) He was a chain bearer and was paid 50 cents an acre but had to take his pay in land. Some of which he probably never saw. He probably came into Ohio in 1794-1797.

He died 8 Sept 1839 at his daughters home (Ada McMillan) possibly of a burst appendex. Buried at Bourneville Cem. Ross Co. Ohio.

His home still stands in Huntington twp.

Friday, Sept 26, 1986 I went to Bourneville, Ohio 45617 to see the tombstones of George Vinsonhaler, his brother Jacob and some children of Jacob.

The Cemetery is located on Upper Twin Rd. which is off of Route 50, going thru the town of Bourneville turn left on Upper Twin Rd. (Dairy Bar is on the corner and Post Office is facing the road. Go past the school. It is located between the school and Bourneville Christian Chapel and is on the right of the road. It is a very old cemetery and the Vinsonhaler stones are located almost in the Center of the Cemetery.

Notes for Sarah MCGOON

Copy of letter from Sarah McGoon Hartt to Nancy Art Vinsonhaler

dated 18 Sept 1865.

Mrs. Vinsonhaler, Your letter of lst inst. came to hand yesterday. You ask what ailed my good dear son Charles, he died of strangling Hernia from the rupture in his groin on tisticli. You recollect my telling you of his harrowing in a stalk field for Mr. Barnes at Lacon, Illinois and that it broke open the rupture in his groin from lifting the harrow to clean it of the stalks every few rows? Well, I attended him after we came here and he appeared well only weak. Outwardly but the cord inwardly was affected and he undertook to learn to ride on horseback. After he was discp-----anged for I sent him a substitute on the first of March last. I paid his substitute ll hundred dollars, that is one thousand and one hundred dollars. My step son, Dr. Nathan M. Burnham went and arranged the business for me and they both got back Georgia. Charles and Dr. bought a pair of horses and Charles undertook to learn to ride for I wished them to stay in a warm climate until I got my affairs at Washington settled and then we would all then start to Rio de Janerio, Brazil, South America. The riding affected him inwardly in his groin and testicals began to swell. Nathan done all that he could do for him but to no affect. Charles wanted me to come to him so Dr. telegraphed for me to come. Poor child said Oh if Mother was here she could cure me sure.

I started from here on the 1st of April - Charles died on the 5th at four in the evening- I got there on the 7th at ten in morning. He died of Mortification in that part. The same as my son Thornton Burnham did at the Military School at West Point in (can't read number it looks like #18)

We took his remains to New Orleans and deposited them in my family tomb. My stepson, Dr. Nathan Burnham was attack with Dongue Fever the day we got to New Orleans and died on the 27th of May, one month and 21 days after Charles. Stayed in New Orleans until the 23rd July. I lived by their tombs each day - The good darlings sleep quietly. I shall start for Brazil on the 26th of this month, that is on next Wed. via San Francisco, Calif. I go to Washington City and then New York, will stay in New York three weeks - write me c/o San Francisco, CA.

the 13th of Nov.-- My health is good I weigh 198 pounds. I am glad Nancy for your sake that you have been lucky in your crop.

My regards to all,

Sarah M. Hartt

My business is good in this city, I see many old acquaintances. All good Drs. like me and give me the right hand of freindship. I make one hundred dollars per month with an --------- occasional? practice, but long to get out of this climate. My poor Charles had grown to be most six feet and weighed one hundred and sixty five pounds. I sent Ione Art 3 dollars for washing, James 2 dollars as balance due him on his trip to Eldyville for my 'trunks hope they got it safe--last July one year ago-- my expenses are high but I live very comfortable and will do so while I have the means to do it. Now I am all alone I shall be more extravagent than ever....good bye.
