Blais

Pierre Blais, 1640-1700. He probably left France from the port of LaRochelle in the Province of Aunis in 1664 on the Dutch ship NOIR captained by Pierre Filly of Dieppe. He was the son of Mathurin Blais and Francoise Penigaut. (Mathurin had previously been married to Marie Auchier 11/9/1630 at Melleran, of Angouleme in France.) Mathurin and Francoise were married on 4/30/1634. (His grandfather. Jacques Blais was married to Louise Penigaud who was buried at Melleran 12/2/1629). Pierre was raised in the Parish of Hanc, near Melleran. also in Angouleme. France (see the map of France).

The census of 1667 in New France (Canada) lists Pierre Blais as living on the Ile d'Orleans (on the St. Lawrence River. near the city of Quebec), born about 1640, occupation was laborer. On June 22,1667, Pierre Blais received a concession of land within the limits of the future parish of Saint dean on the Ile d'Orleans.

Pierre Blais married Anne Perrault (originally from Saint Sulpice, Paris) on October 12.1669 at the church of Saint Famille on the island. She was the daughter of Jean Perrault and Jeanne Valta (she may have been a king's daughter-brought a dowry into the family estimated at 300 livres (pounds)). The 1681 census taker noted that Pierre owned 4 head of cattle and 15 arpents (acres) of cleared land.

Pierre and Anne had ten children: 8 boys and 2 girls (4 died early in life). The boys are named: Pierre, born and died 3/1672, another Pierre (2/18/ 1673). Antoine (our ancestor, born 2/25/1677). Jacques (4/8/1682) and Jean (11/2/1685). Martin (8/28/ 1670). The girls were Marie Anne (6/9/1675) and Marguerite. Anne, their mother, died at St. Baptiste, Ilse of Orleans, on June 29.1688 while giving birth to Marguerite (who later married Etienne Lamy in 1714).

Pierre nominated a guardian for his children and had an inventory made of his possessions on April 18.1689. On June 5,1689 he married Elizabeth Royer at Saint dean, lie of Orleans. Their children were: Ann Francois (5/ 27/1691), Alexis (4/8/1693), Louis-Charles (6/3/1697), and Gabriel. Gabriel was born March 27,1699 (one year before his father died) and was adopted by Pierre Coquet and his wife Marie Chaperon. Alexis went exploring down the Mississippi and was killed by Chicahas Indians and was buried 3/3/ 1722 at Kaskaskia. Pierre Blais died suddenly on 2/16/1700.

Eight months later, his widow, Elizabeth, married (11/16/1700) Robert Pepin at Saint dean. She went with her husband to Montreal where they had 7 children (She died 6/22/1715).
